▌ POSITION SUMMARY

The Prevention Specialist provides support to participants in the community, applying public health principles and evidence-based strategies to prevent substance use. Working under the Chief Prevention Officer, the Prevention Specialist helps assess community needs, deliver prevention education and programming, build partnerships with community organizations and coalitions, and document and evaluate program outcomes in support of healthier individuals, families, and communities.

▌ ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Prevention Programming

• Apply basic public health processes to the work of substance use prevention and adhere to current best practices.
• Assess community needs and capacities as related to substance use prevention.
• Assist in developing comprehensive strategic plans based on community needs.
• Assist in designing and implementing substance use prevention programs, practices, and policies across the six prevention strategies below.
• Assist in evaluating the process, output, outcome, and impact of substance use prevention programs, practices, and policies.
• Assist in evaluating the satisfaction of participants and partners.

Information Dissemination

Provide information about the nature of drug use, abuse, and addiction and the effects on individuals, families, and communities, as well as information on available programs and services.

Prevention Education

Facilitate two-way communication aimed at affecting critical life and social skills, using evidence-based principles and programs and a variety of health education methods.

Alternative Activities

Facilitate constructive and healthy activities in pro-social environments based on the interests of the target population.

Identification & Referral

Identify individual and family needs and provide referrals as necessary to appropriate and complementary services.

Community-Based Processes

Collaborate with community members, other organizations, and coalitions to help create and sustain community systems and environments that support individuals and families in maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Environmental Approaches

Promote community standards, codes, and attitudes that reduce the incidence and prevalence of substance use, including through legislative advocacy, communication campaigns, social norms strategies, and organizational and policy change.

Documentation & Quality Assurance

• Complete all prevention-related documentation and data collection as required.
• Assist in the preparation of periodic reports according to established protocols.
• Maintain confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state, county, and agency rules and regulations.
• Follow policies, procedures, and standards for efficient and effective services.
• Ensure effective, quality programming in compliance with contracts, regulations, and Anuvia goals and standards.
• Maintain current competence in evidence-based prevention programs, practices, policies, and drug use trends.
• Obtain and keep current any certifications that may be required for this position now and in the future.
• Other duties as assigned.

Events Planning

• Assist in the preparation and implementation of agency events.
